This is primarily a Tulane football blog, although I do occasionally comment on all matters Tulane that may or may not be any of my business. I love following Tulane Greenwave football, zing-zang Bloody Marys, hostessing cute tailgating parties, and life in New Orleans. It's fabulous. oh and I adore Mr. Hullabaloo. PS This blog is not affiliated in any way "officially" with Tulane University or Tulane Athletics. It is purely the crazy antics and obsessions of Mr. and Mrs. Hullabaloo who love them some greenwave (I say tee-ay (!) y'all).

The Scarlett O'Haras

yes, y'all... I am calling out Tulane "fans" for wearing purple on purpose - for the love of yahweh - and actually thinking it was a good idea. OMG Tulane alumni, my lost little lambs..... where did we go wrong? Didn't we teach you anything?! Olive and Blue <-- Theeeese are our school colors.

I told Tyrone that this season feels like Toledo Year 4. No special teams coach (omg, that one kick off where the ball hit a Greenie on the head? LOL), head scratching DoddmentumTM-esque play calling. He agreed....

"Badie to the Bone" tho. I love his effort.

photeauxs by Parker Waters

And Teddy Veal! What great players. Our flickers of promise.

Obviously, I would rather be winning. But I can tolerate an occasional moral victory: like remember when we almost came back against Syracuse in the dome in 2011 and thought we were gonna get the ball back on that 3 and out which ended up (boo hiss) a bogus pass interference on Dezman Moses? or when we had Alabama back on their heels in 2008? or OMG being up against the Corndogs the first half with that safety of Matt Flynn and then the beer shower on Andre Anderson after his touchdown? FUNNNN!

Tell me that's not more fun than losing to Rice like we did in uninspiring fashion in 2013. Or our Benny Hill interpretation last week in Durham. I have infinitely more respect for playing a stronger schedule. You learn more from challenges than easy successes, which is why I hate lazy scheduling and booking teams like flippin Army and Southeastern. Because it doesn't do anything for us except mask our problems, or give us another big glaring L, like a scarlett letter.

So speaking of Scarlett, we actually made it to Rutgers! Only Mrs. Hullabaloo would have a compilation of travel stories. Fer real. It's always something when I fly. This particular trip, the FAA tower in Chicago caught fire so our connection to Midway was cancelled. It was like Planes, Tranes, and Automobiles across the country. Coach Hullabaloo and I ended up flying into different airports on Friday. I luckily sat with a Greenie on my flight to the East Coast, but we had the craziest time getting her rental car. Getting lost, getting on the wrong airport tram, finding out at the first car rental counter that the reservation wasn't valid, going back to the airport, and then finally being told that the only available rental was a pick up truck. OMG, we were laughing and crying. My girl was like, puh-leeeze tell me it's a quad cab! Because could you like imagine our luggage flying out the back of the truck on the NJ Turnpike? Lawd.

Gameday was early because the game was scheduled for a noon kick-off for TV. Even though some question my sanity for passionately following Tulane football - I was not about to spend $45 per person (!) for some cafeteria-style burgers at the Tulane Alumni Tailgating (completely crazy, amirite?!) which was set up out in Pennsylvania practically. If that's not enough, it was an additional $65 per game ticket through Tulane's allotment.

We opted instead to meet up with my girl whom I'm calling Eaglette, and her adorable family for their tailgating in the park across the street from the stadium. We also found walk up game tickets for $20 and $30. Between parking and all, we were out $80, instead of a potential $210. The cost savings elicited just minimal amount of complaining from Coach Hullabaloo following yet another loss. Following Tulane Football is, after all, a past time. We aren't completely nuts.

Anyways, Eaglette's family are the sweetest! This is me with her cutest niece on the planet. Santa brought her this very cute cheerleading outfit so she can properly cheer for her cousin who is on the team. And she spiral curled her beautiful hair for the occasion. I wanted to teach her the Hullabaloo. so cute.

Eaglette and her family made buffalo chicken pasta, pizza bread with red sauce, and NJ-style muffulettas - which were actually a very tasty interpretation. They made them with ciabatta bread, sun dried tomatoes, some olive salad, the italian meats, and then a thicker slab of cheese which actually tasted creamy like a brie. They were delicious.

I also loved the concept of buffalo chicken pasta. I think I'd like to interpret that with thin chopped slices of celery garnished on top, matchstick carrots, and some blue cheese crumbles. Remember Kokopelli's buffalo chicken burritos?! Or maybe a buffalo chicken dip with fried bowtie pasta? yum-o....

Anyways, before heading in to the game, the younger adults did beer shots.

We had tailgated in the park literally across the street from the stadium, so it was an easy uphill walk. Coach Hullabaloo taking a breather as we watched the Rutgers marching band and mascot on horseback march by before the game.

Yes, the sky really was that beautiful and blue. Gorgeous.

Below is from a tailgating group nearby us, omg on the head dress. Kinda cute, right? Since the head dress was just like the mascot's, I wanted to share the photo.

But speaking of dresses, Rutgers fan-ettes and tailgatresses don't wear gameday dresses. Coach Hullabaloo noticed and made a comment about the absence of gameday dresses. I do not understand. I do not speak that language. I am from the South and we love our gameday and jazz fest sun dresses. It was 83, sun was blazing, and all of the ladies were wearing jeans or jean shorts and t-shirts. I cannot be in heavy restrictive clothing on hot game days. Plus the farmer tans? no.

So wearing a dress at Rutgers definitely makes you stand out and earns you some brownie points. I was able to get in to the stadium sans bag check because the security guard was caught off guard by my dress and was so wrapped up fawning over it that he waved me through.

Coach Hullabaloo and my $20 & $30 tickets ended up being in the same section as the Tulanians who paid $65. This was our view.

As you can see, this year they put us up on the upper deck of the stadium, which I wasn't so much a fan of. It was like we were in time out and not allowed to have any fun. Our cheerleaders were a thousand miles away down on the field. I never saw them. In 2010, Rutgers had put us in the lower corner endzone next to the student section so that I could ooh and ahh and squeal over their totally cute student section traditions. I still love their air guitar on opponent's third downs. And the Rutgers band was exceptional. Their drum line does beats like an oncoming train after first downs, which was really really cool. I love college football traditions! I don't understand why we can't import any cute and fun ideas of our own.

Another fun/funny tradition is that Rutgers (as does every college football team in America, except for Tulane because it doesn't fit our model for some unspecified reason) is they do a video montage of their pro players. So we were all yelling RAY RICE! WHERE'S RAY RICE? when Rutgers did their video this year. lmao. Honestly, I hope that us cat calling the video annoyed the one Rutgers fan in our section who was brought by a Tulanian to watch the game. He was being THAT disagreable fan with low self-esteem and small man parts who felt the need to whiplash everyone in the section about our misfit team and lack of accompanying displays of school spirit like mascots and bands that other schools bring. Thanks for pointing out something we don't already know!

Mr. and Mrs. StPeteWave and Coach Hullabaloo and I did our best to lead cheers in the section. We got everyone to join in after first downs to Mr. StPeteWave's "WHATS THAT?! TU-LANE! FIRST! DOWN!" and my version of BC-Wave's "2 LANE, 4 LANES, 6 LANES A HIGHWAY! DRIVE! WAVE! DRIVE!"

Anyways, I did leave the game with a memento. TSA took away my sunscreen lotion at the airport, so Coach Hullabaloo is sunburnt like a crawfish, and I ended up with a sunburn around my Mignon Faget pelican charm on the middle of my chestbone LOL. Like a pelican tattooo. Except that I kept calling it a beaver tan, uhhhhh, hellooo....instead of a racoon tan. We totally LOLd on my slip of tongue there. Ha Ha Ha!

Later that night we met up at Due Mari for dinner in New Brunswick and look at our menus. How olive and blue!

I was very impressed with how all of the businesses, including our fancy restaurant which we were at, put flags up for gameday. Oh Greenieees....Dare to dream y'all, right?!

So now we have a bye and I am praying, praying y'all, that the UConn game is an afternoon or evening game. Otherwise, I shant be tailgating at home until November and that will make me very sad.

Buh-bye my chamudis! Catch you after the bye

Rutgers Video Replay

If you are obsessed like me, you can watch the actual TV replay of the Rutgers game online at Espn3.

-> Click Here to Link to Video <-

Warning: the espn3 broadband sucks during the day, so it's best to watch early in the morning, or it gets hung up the entire time.

You gotta watch it. They show that riveting Kung Fu Fighting performance by the Rutgers dance team. (Add this Kung Fu Fighting deal to the list of "What Were They Thinking?")

And you get to find out that Jonathan Ginsburgh, among his many talents, manages to perform as both himself and Cairo Santos as their names are used interchangeably throughout the game by the announcers. Also that Casey Robottom is from "La-Playce."

But seriously, ESPN did fantastic replays at every angle of the Kemp-DJ-Kemp Touchdown pass, the Brock Sanders catch in triple coverage, Alex Lauricella breaking up the pass to Sanu late in 4th and Alex Wacha's game-saving interception.

To be fair to the announcers, they also give Trent Mackey a lot of air time. Mackey deserved every single second of discussion, he was a beast. They also gave major props to Cody Sparks (yay for Nell!)

So I am allowing us just one more day of basking in post-victory glow. And then, my petit choux, it's time to rip off the bandaid to face the impending dread of playing Army this weekend.

Knight and Day!

One knight down, two more knights to go on the schedule...

Mr. and Mrs. Hullabaloo had a wonderful time Railgating to New Jersey with all the other TU Dats either staying in The City for the game or with TU Dats who are now living in NYC.

Rutgers is a very green and open campus, it feels like a park. Everything is very well-organized on game day and the shuttle buses are easy and efficient. We railgated to New Brunswick, shared a cab from the station to the RAC with other TU Dats for the Tulane tailgating.

The Rutgers Stadium has to be the nicest stadium next to SMU on our schedule. I will happily return even if we had lost, which I swear I thought was going to happen even after there was 1:30 left on the clock.

All of the Rutgers fans were exceptionally congenial, we made many acquaintances and look forward to hosting them back in New Orleans. I am still so impressed by their manners. Good upbringing makes gameday just such a more enjoyable outing than the hostile environments at the other Knight and Cooter campuses on our schedule. and what's more, Rutgers has no NEED to put lipstick on a pig and hire Town and Gowns, cause Jersey-ites are all genuinely very nice and lovely people (that's for you Jack!).

Dear Rutgers: Mrs. Hullabaloo is your #1 Superfan

Also, I just LOVED, loved, loved the Rutgers Third Down Air Guitar ritual thingie. Too cute and so cleaver!! All you need are some of your Rutgers fan-ettes to start making themselves some cute gameday dresses and you'll be all set!

So I found all these great photos courtesy of the AP.

Alex Wacha with the game-ending interception

The one photo I was looking for was Jonathan Ginsburgh's absolutely amazing save to punt the ball 46 yards despite a high snap that could have resulted in a safety and thus generate a complete meltdown.

There were some exceptional plays which I have not witnessed on a Tulane team since Shaun King, and those photos were sadly not captured! Alex Lauricella broke up a 3rd down pass at the goal line with 1:40 left on the clock, and then Brock Sanders coming up with a catch at mid-field in triple coverage! OMG, Mrs. Hullabaloo was having seizures right there on the sideline!

So Joe Kemp in the wildcat to DJ Banks and DJ wiki-wiki airing it out to Kemp for the TD - that play looked like it was totally happening in Slow Motion and at every point looked vulnerable. I had no fingernails left after witnessing that. I was so stunned I almost forgot to do the Hullabaloo. for real!

At the 1:30 mark Tulane failed to keep the ball (grrr Dan Dodd) and had to punt back to Rutgers. Meanwhile, clueless Rutgers fans were streaming out of the stadium and we TU Dats just could not believe it. You're Playing Tulane, Man! You could block a punt, run it back for a TD and then you'll probably still have time for one more possesion and TD.

So imagine the absolute astonishment of all the TU Dats when the game went our way! Oh glorious sweet Jesus! Thank you for your kind and merciful gifts!! and thank you also for the heavenly post-game Pizza dinner at John's Pizzeria at 44th and 8th.

PS Tennessee - PLEASE LEARN TO COUNT. We coulda had ourselves a Trifecta weekend and You Blew It!

Oh well, Hullabaloo!

Favorite Things

One of my favorite things: Tulane Not Playing at Army - yay! While we still have this wretched team on the schedule (why? why? why?!), hopefully we can finally fling them sometime soon. Temple, Penn State, Maryland, UConn ... anyone?

One of my guilty pleasures this past summer was The Bachelorette (Frank was such a fraud!) and Bethenny's Getting Married. I totally heart Bethenny Frankel and her sassiness! Mrs. Hullabaloo and Mrs. Frankel-Hoppy SO would have been friends had she been a Newcomb Girl in the early 90's.

As any good Newcomb Girl does, I heart New York! Being from New York or loving New York is an absolute prerequisite of being affiliated with Tulane. We are so lucky to be an outpost enclave of The City at Tulane. It's reason #210 why Tulane is the best school EVAH!

So Bethenny's wedding planner, the infinitely patient, Shawn Rabideau, posted a list of his favorite things to do in New York and I am so excited to try some of these on his list for Tulane's away game at Rutgers next weekend this football season.

I always do "my" favorite things to do when I go to NYC (The Strand, Century 21, H&M, Pearl River Market and Zara's), so I was happy to read Shawn's recommend list and be inspired to get out of my comfort zone and try new things. Such as creating the gumbo-like Matzo Ball Soup at Stein's Deli on Magazine (another one of my favorite things about Tulane and New Orleans)

So here, Tulane fans traveling to Rutgers, are some of Shawn's Favorite Spots in The City in no particular order:
1. Ardesia Wine Bar - Can't get enough of this Hell's Kitchen wine bar! Great wine, great food and happy hour from 5pm to 7pm Mon-Fri!

2. Favorite Burger - "5 Napkin Burger" Too many good things to list, but you MUST try their sushi…yes, they serve that too!

3. Limelight Marketplace – it’s just cute! (Exclamtion Point! Mrs. Hullabaloo is ALL over this shopping suggestion. STAT!)

4. Who doesn’t love pizza? Run to one of Shawn's all time favorite spots Johns Pizzeria. It’s a great Times Square spot that offers a quality meal for a quality price. Perfect for before or after the theater. (Speaking of Pizza, Mo's Pizza in Marrero displays a signed Patrick Ramsey helmet as that was his favorite pizza joint in Nola.)

5. Shawn's favorite Meatpacking District eats – Son Cubano and Fig & Olive. To die for! (Mr. and Mrs. Hullabaloo always do the same old, same old in the Meatpacking District: One. and we are ashamed to admit we have never, ever been to the One right here in Riverbend in New Orleans.)

6. One of Shawn's all time favorite Italian restaurants, Il Vagabondo is a hidden gem on the east side. Directly out of “The Godfather” with a full Bocce Court, this place has the most amazing lasagna you’ve ever tasted!

8. If you like paper and stationery run to Paper Presentations. It’s like the Baskin Robbins of Stationery! (Did someone say Stationery?)

9. If you like Red Velvet Cake and fresh baked bread like I do, Shawn recommends any of Amy’s Bread locations throughout the city. They have the best fresh baked goods you’ve ever tasted. Perfect for the holidays! Get your order in early because the good stuff goes fast! (No holiday needed for Red Velvet Cake!)

10. Like cupcakes…Forget about waiting in line at some of the Cupcake Stop locations, you can shop online CupCakeStop.com and ship some of their amazing flavors such as French Toast with Maple Syrup and bacon…AMAZING!

11. Looking to have a cocktail with an amazing view? Go to the Mandarin Oriental Lobby Lounge. Fantastic drinks with a fantastic view of Central Park. Perfect anytime of the year! (Coach and Mrs. Hullabaloo are big fans of Mandarin Oriental and their impeccable service)

12. Who knew you could have cocktails in the library? Well you can at the Hudson Hotel's Library Bar. The perfect atmosphere after work or before hitting the town!

13. Like chocolate? Run to La Masion du Chocolat. They have the MOST exquisite chocolates Shawn has ever tasted in the city!

14. Although it’s name doesn’t do it justice, the Frying Pan located off of 26th Street and the West Side Highway is a “hot spot” of sorts. An old light ship (now converted to a bar) that is on the registrar of historic places, is something fun and out of the ordinary.

So Tulane Fans, let's do something out of the ordinary and bring us back a win!
