This is primarily a Tulane football blog, although I do occasionally comment on all matters Tulane that may or may not be any of my business. I love following Tulane Greenwave football, zing-zang Bloody Marys, hostessing cute tailgating parties, and life in New Orleans. It's fabulous. oh and I adore Mr. Hullabaloo. PS This blog is not affiliated in any way "officially" with Tulane University or Tulane Athletics. It is purely the crazy antics and obsessions of Mr. and Mrs. Hullabaloo who love them some greenwave (I say tee-ay (!) y'all).

Happy Early Channukah Everyone!

Thank you Bill Haber of the AP for these totally rad pictures!

Our friend GreenMenace drove past our post-game tailgating yesterday and yelled out his window "I don't know where y'all are gonna be for Christmas, but it sure as heeeeeelllll isn't going to be here!"

Yeessss Sir indeedy. Mazol Tov!

I teauxtally called out my student chickadees for missing yet another great game! One chickadee was even texting me persistently during the game about a matter that is still several weeks out.

Peter, Joseph, and Mary...I was some kind of sassing back at my phone that was buzzing intermittently throughout the game: what is wrong with you?!! Don't you know that Tulsa has the ball and all their time outs and 3 minutes left on the clock?!!! OMG I totally need to withhold my cute survival kits and start enforcing some discipline around Chateau Hullabaloo.

Fer real. I cannot abide interrupting important matters at hand, like bowl eligibility.

So yes, ya'll: Hullabaloo Ray Ray! We are Going to a Bowl Game!

St. DallHawaiinapolisburg, here we come!

I feel that Ryan Grant is saying to this Golden Hurricane "YA HEARD?!"

ha ha

Coach Hullabaloo and I are just pleased as punch and sitting around with huge chesire grins, just snickering at Tulsa that we totally neutered them in this game in order to get bowl eligible. Although you'll notice that we left nothing to chance. Coach continues to wear the same outfit and I'm sporting my lucky "Roll Wave" button. I even did some of my baseball superstitions like rubbing my fingers and the side of our baseball caps during some of the Tulsa posessions!

Hey! It's not weird if it works! Coach says he's going to wear tights under the shorts if we end up in Memphis in December. We even talked with some of the greenbackers afterwards who say they keep bringing the same food to each tailgate to not mess up the juju. Ha!

Well, this win went a long way in washing away all of our simply awful trips to Tulsa of our days of yore during the Toledo Error. Because Coach and Mrs. Hullabaloo have sat through some serious doozies up there and endured all manner of stupid taunts from their hick fans.

Of course, them hurricanes couldn't just leave well enough alone. The Tulsa Galaxy World newspaper called us "lousy" in their pre-game coverage. And then their OG Jake Alexander acted ALL a fool during the game, kneeing Zach Davis in the head like that and then kicking Nico Marley. What was that story? Thankfully Messieur Alexander realized the error of his ways and apologized to Zach.

Because for real I thought Graff was gonna fling off his headset and take care of business hisself, if Lorenzo Doss didn't get to Alexander first. Doss was ready to rumble and had to be told to simmer down. ha ha! We are still waiting on Dillon Foxworth to own up on that blow to the head personal foul he committed tho. There was all kind of blatant bs that Tulsa did not get called out on as well. The refs were totally like plucked up from a rec league or something.

Steve Barrios even finally piped up with a funny on the infamous Review of the Review by the refs on Lorenzo Doss' takeaway. That was so absurd. A review on a review? Can you do that? Re-review your review? What is this multiple choice? Anyways, Barrios said "I haven't seen this many reviews since my daughter was in dance school!!" lulz!

Can you believe Times Picayune actually sent a photographer? Michael Democker strikes again.

One thing I didn't think we would be seeing again, but apparently continues to rear it's head is 10 Men on the Field. I swear this is our signature thing now. The Tulane Ten Man Special. We are so good now, we'll only play 10 men from here on out. But seriously, we got a delay of game penalty when Dante Butler wasn't in place in the first half and then we had 10 guys on special teams for the Tulsa's punt in the 3rdQ after stuffing them on their 34.

So, another something special is that we had was a visit by Homecoming Royalty to our tailgate ~ check it out!

This year's Homecoming King and Queen had heard that we had the best tailgate and that they had to come by, so come by they did. I very much enjoyed their visit, but disappointed they were tiara-less. Winning is bringing out all sorts of people, it's very exciting times at Hullabaloo Huddle.

Even the baseball team set up a tailgate! This is the beginning baseball krewe setting up their tailgating homestead and flagrantly violating the no grill rules.

Later on they were totally packed with the rest of the team and girlfriends, it was great to see. I love seeing the different teams support each other and attend each other's games. Hope they get tents for campus tailgating too.

So now, finally, for the food and fun portion of the week. Since it was Tulsa and based on my personal experience of Tulsa food - we had your basic tailgate food: hot dogs, priscilla's potato salad, cole slaw and pulled pork sandwiches. Although we did jazz up a few dishes.

As you know I refuse, refuse, refuse to serve 7 layer dip (gag me), so I always find recipes that jazz it up somehow or are an interpretation of layered dip like the greek version we did for Homecoming last year. So I found this version from Tasty Kitchen that turned it into a cheesecake and I pumped it up a notch by drizzling cilantro pesto and pepitas in addition to the recommended toppings from the recipe.

It was such a hit that it flipped over and did a 360 and landed face up on the ground. What a save. For real, Coach Hullabaloo fixed it and didn't tell me about the tablescaping tragedy until afterwards. ha ha!

I also found a spicy cheddar corn dip recipe, because you know, Tulsans eat corn. Recipe is below.

And Booty went to town on the drinks. Not only did she make the petri dish jello shots, she created this Swamp Water cocktail that had green tea vodka in it and apple liquor. And look, she braved the 22 Jump Street filming to snag dry ice for presentation.

I also picked up pumpkin beer and sparkling cider for a pumpkin cider cocktail that was also enjoyed.

And then for the kiddos, Lucy's Mom brought golden graham smores, which was messy gooey and the kids loved.

Lucy and Lucy's Mom. So cute.

and then I made the simplest of all dessert recipes ever. These cookies.

So easy, I'm embarrassed to even list the instructions. And I learned from our Asian tailgating to always buy a backup option in case things go awry in the kitchen, which they did. So I had a test batch using sugar cookie base and then the good batch that were the peanut butter cookie base.

PEANUT BUTTER PUMPKIN SPICE COOKIE MUFFINS

refrigerated pack of peanut butter cookie dough
pumpkin spice hershey kisses (seasonal, found it at Target)
colored sugar sprinkles
pinch of cinnamon sugar

Grease up a mini muffin baking pan with 24 slots. Preheat oven to 375. Take a melon scooper and scoop dough into each of the slots. Pop into the oven for 10 minutes. Meanwhile unwrap 25 hershey kisses. Take the pan out the oven and press those kisses into the little cookie muffins real quick so that they "stick" while the cookies are still warm. Sprinkle the tops with cinnamon sugar and some team colored sprinkles. Let the pan completely cool and THEN pop them out to take to tailgate. (waiting for them to cool was where I went awry with the sugar cookie batch).

CHILI CHEESECAKE WITH CILANTRO PESTO

For Pesto:
cup or so handful fresh cilantro
Canola oil
Few leaves of fresh spinach
clove of garlic
half a handful of pine nuts
couple pinches of pepitas
salt and pepper to taste

1 cup Crushed lime flavored Tortilla Chips
3 tbs Butter, Melted
16 oz, weight Cream Cheese, Softened
2 whole Eggs
quarter tsp Chili Powder
eighth tsp Cumin
1 4oz can diced Green Chilies, drained
1 whole Jalapeno, seeded + diced
4 oz Colby-jack Cheese, shredded (the marbled looking cheese)
4 oz sharp cheddar (I like Seaside)

For Garnish:
third cup of sour cream
A roma tomato or a handful cherry tomatoes, chopped
Green Onions, Chopped
Black Olives, Diced
Cilantro, Chopped

So it's this easy. Take the melted butter and mix with the crushed tortillas. Pre-heat the oven to 325. Press butter tortilla mixture into the bottom of a 9" spring pan and pop it into the oven for 10-12 mins. Take out and put in the fridge to cool. The original recipe says to mix everything in stages, but we mixed the eggs and then tossed with the cheeses, spices, chilis, jalapeno and gave it all a whirl until everything looked good and mixed. Take the spring pan out of the fridge and give the sides a little spritz of coating with some pam. Pour cheese mixture into the oven and then back at 325 for 30 minutes. Meanwhile whiz up the pesto ingredients in a food processor, drizzling the canola oil slowly into the machine. Chop up your toppings. Take cheesecake out of the oven, let cool on a rack for about 15 or so minutes. Run a knife around the outside of the cheesecake before opening up the springs on the pan to remove. Lather a thin layer of sour cream on top and then drizzle the cilantro and rest of the toppings. Refrigerate until it's time to take to tailgating.

CORN DIP

Can of mexi-corn, drained
couple tablespoons of diced canned green chilis
one medium jalapeƱo, de-ribbed and diced
squirt of sriracha for good measure
cup and half of shredded sharp cheddar cheese (not pre-shredded packs. Shred fresh)
some sprinkling of sugar
salt and pepper to taste
cup each of mayo and sour cream
2 stalk of chopped green onions (white parts mostly)

Ok, this one is hard: mix everything and refrigerate for at least overnight so that the flavors mingle. Serve with fritos. This might even be tastier with chopped pecans in it.

Alright y'all next up: Spoiling Homecoming at Del Boca Vista FAU! See you in Boca!!

Meraviglioso!

Our Play-by-Play Announcer has found his "Sole" Mate. his Muse. The Perfect "Pair", yes! Comhghairdeachas!

Signore e Signora Hullabaloo were privileged to be allowed into the inner circle of The Voice of the Greenwave to witness his nuptials to his very lovely Muse. Yes little chickens, The Graf is hitched!

It was a lovely celebration from beginning to end, and those who missed it (you know who you are) really missed a wonderful celebration and the Groom's Cake replica of Turchin Stadium, which was just amazing.

The cutest thing were the bridesmaids all decorated their heels like Muses shoes. Similar to this beauty given to Mrs. Hullabaloo last Mardi Gras (a gift from the Missus V.O.W.).

I have to say that I don't know what the happy couple was thinking by inviting BOTH Peggy and I cause it was just like regular season. Just as if we were sitting in 110 at Turchin or 140 at the Dome, people watching, color commentating, cackling outloud. Which made being serious while in God's house very difficult. During my communion prayer I tried to close my eyes and meditate in prayer and had to keep saying "shhhh!" to Peggy out of the side of my mouth while laughter tears were rolling down my face. Lol y'all.

So at the reception, Kaare Johnson, local radio personality and upriver alumnus, thought it might be funny and put a score on a piece of napkin and stuck it on the Groom's Cake. Mrs. Hullabaloo was not amused and ammended said score. Oh but yes I did. I think that's why I was getting darts from Messieur Johnson. But I shant have Turchin defaced. Not even in jest. I can't allow it.

Mrs. Hullabaloo shook some booty y'all. The band broke into a cover of Ying Yang Twin's "Halftime" and we got c-razy Crunk y'all. The band even played Boot Scootin Boogie and Peggy helped me remember the line dance. Lawd was THAT a blast from the past. Brought me right back to our adventurous jaunts as a Newcomb Co-eds out at Mudbugs.

Anyways, in all it was a fun night, such a special celebration in the Greenwave family. "Your Happy Final:" Mr. and Mrs. Voice of the Wave happily ever after....

Gettin Jiggy With It

Okay, so after a long hiatus, Coach and Mrs. Hullabaloo and all of our wonderful Hullabaloo Huddle Krewe finally had ourselves a proper tailgatin'.

And it was a veritable splash, I tell you. Plus LSU is currently getting their asses handed to them by Ole Miss. It has turned out to be a grand day afterall!

So at our Spring Tailgating Festivus, we took the opportunity to shower the future Mr. and Mrs. Voice of the Wave with love and best wishes and hosted a SURPRISE baseball-themed tailgate shower.

Cute Baseball themed cake, koozies, cracker jack favors and everything. O-fficially the cutest Baseball Shower Party.

We are officially the best tailgatresses in the Free World. I'm not trying to start anything. Just sayin'. We're the best.

Being that it was in Peggy's Patio, the theme was "Patio Gifts" and the loot Mr. and Mrs. VOW received were SO adorable!

Priscilla and Mr. Jim provided some burld Crawfish with all the trimmings, which was yum-o. Coach Hullabaloo was fabulous and picked up a sack at the new Restaurant Depot. It's located on Broad at Earhart right before the overpass. That place is awesome. Crawfish was $1.89 a pound live and we got good ones too. Add Restaurant Depot to your list of "must shop here for tailgating" places.

Peggy whipped up her insanenly delicious (and easy peasy) Red Pepper Dip. And Booty Judy obliged and brought "something fun" - some White Wine Sangria. It was slap yo momma good. I swear.

That convo with Booty Judy was so funny!

I needed some comic relief. You see, Booty and I spent hours manipulating crazy lady at the EEB office to get over herself just MOVE THE FREAKIN' vans parked in front of Peggy's Patio (I mean it's "ours." Peggy's officially squatted it and everything).

Those vans were going to be gone before tailgating today. I didn't care who I had to call to make it happen. It took this bizarre creature 4 hours and countless phone calls (can you believe she actually hung up on me at one point?) to finally arrive at the conclusion of just who she was up against. She just needed "do it Mrs. Hullabaloo's way" and we would all be happier sooner in lieu of delaying the inevitable. Crazy Lady just had to learn the hard way for some apparent reason.

So anyways, in the midst of our travails, Booty asked what she could bring for our Spring Tailgating Festivus. "Something Fun" was my response. a short silence from Booty and then her response was "Okay!"

and away we went! Cause Booty doesn't need further embellishment. She's a true Greenie Gal thru and thru.

Let me tell you: we had a hoot today, cause Booty is serious as a heart attack about getting to be Riptide. Ever since I showed her the video of Puddles beating up Shasta. It has inspired Booty to take Riptide to a whole new level. Booty has taken to stalking Jason Potuto, the Greenwave Marketing Director, and everything. I'll need to start a facebook page to take up Booty's plight. I mean, the very essence of democracy is hanging on by a thread here if Booty does not become Riptide.

Okay, my dear fans, speaking of Greenie Dats who love all things Tulane Greenwave: so this week will have a super duper edition of SuperFan (finally! yes I know you've been starved for posts from Mrs. Hullabaloo. So I shall oblige). It will be a special treat for the members of the Greenie Dat Nation. A #1 Hero to all of us who bleed olive and blue.

stay tuned!

...and in the meantime, please enjoy these recipes care of Peggy and Booty Judy.

RED PEPPER DIP
(for those of you foodies, this is a variation on Romesco)
1/2 cup almonds, toasted
1 cup jarred roasted red peppers, drained (or you can make your own, very easy)
2 teaspoons red wine vinegar
1 large garlic clove
2 tablespoons EVOO

To toast almonds, it's super easy. Toss almond slivers or whole almonds into a sautee pan on low heat. Swish 'em around until they brown a little. This brings out the nutty flavor of almonds.

And about roasting red peppers....jarred ones are soooo easy, yes. But so is roasting one if you have an extra second in your day. And let me add that red peppers are really just an essential flavor profile in delicioius dips and sauces. Whiz some up into hummus and it just takes everything up to a whole new level of deliciousness. You'll be the crowned Queen of the Blacktop for adding red pepper to your tailgating recipes.

So now, on how to make you a properly roasted red pepper. Preheat your oven or toaster oven to 450. Grab the latest issue of Vanity Fair to peruse between turnings. Start by washing off your pepper and remove the stickers (duh). Place it whole onto a baking sheet. Using tongs, turn over the pepper every 10 minutes or so. Sip your iced tea while you read VF. Continue to turn that pepper until all sides are black. Remember how you used to time the exposure you got on each side of your body to ensure an even tan all the way around? You know, when suntanning was considered safe? Okay, so your pepper is now black all the way around, put it in a bowl and cover it with saran wrap. The steaming lets the skin loosen up. Once the pepper has cooled down sufficiently, just slip that outer skin right off like a cheap UCF co-ed on a date and voila you've got a home-made roasted red pepper.

Daddy Hullabaloo is dago and he used to roast red peppers with his bare hands over the stove. Yes, over the flames from a stove. See, this proves that men love to cook when there's danger involved. It's very cave-man-y

Okay, so now that you have your choice of method of obtaining roasted red peppers. You can make this awesome dip.

Put the toasted almonds in processor first and whiz them up until finely chopped. Add in the roasted peppers, vinegar, and garlic. Buzz these ingredients in the processor until it's just a course mixture. We don't want soup here. With the machine running, slowly pour olive oil through feed tube and mix until puree thickens up. Lovingly season with SaltnPeppa. Take a generous helping for quality control. Lick the whole spoon, nobody is looking and who cares, you are making this. So enjoy your tasting. Okay, now you meant to share this at tailgating, so begrudgingly put the rest in a bowl and refrigerate to let the flavors mingle for an hour or up to a day. Then serve in a cute bowl. Cute bowls are essential. Attractive presentation is like 90% of making food taste better.

White Wine Sangria
one large bottle of pinot grigio
one bottle of Looza peach nectar
one medium sized bottle of ginger ale
container of fresh mixed fruit
an apple chopped (if the mixed fruit didn’t have any apple)

Pour the liquid ingredients over the fruit in a pitcher and voila, something fun!

Mazel, my petit choux!

Mr. and Mrs. Hullabaloo...a glorious weekend in New York

Jeremy Williams running his tail off to the goal line...

Game Over...ha ha!

Hullabaloo ray ray!

Graf's play-by-play on the missed field goal by Army will forever go down in history as THE classic Tulane Football moment.

Transcript follows:

Graf: "All right...here we go again...Kolin Walk is gonna hold. Carson Homme is gonna snap it. 37 yards, right in the middle of the field, folks. If he makes it, we lose. If he misses, we win....Snap back. Spot down. Kick is away....[crowd roars] and...IT'S NO GOOD! HE WENT WIDE RIGHT! HE WENT WIDE RIGHT!! IT IS NO GOOD! IT IS NO GOOD! TULANE IS GONNA WIN THIS GAME! YEAH BABY!

Barrios: oh my.

Graf: Exorcise the Demons Baby! IT IS NO GOOD!

Barrios: one for the good guys.

Graf: OH BABY! That's all I can say! That Thing Never Had a Chance! I don't believe it! I don't! oooh!

Barrios: [more mumbling]

Graf: Victory formation, Kemp. Take a Knee! Take a Knee! 4-3-2-1! THIS ONE BELONGS TO THE WAVE! FIRE THAT CANNON OFF! Joe Kemp is on his knees in elation at the 13 yard line. He cannot believe it. Who would believe it? How many have gone against us folks? What a comeback by the Tulane Greenwave! Your final score: Tulane 17, Army 16. We are knotted up at 2 wins, 2 losses as we head to homecoming next week. Does that sound familiar? Army, I tell you, we say we know how they feel is an u nderstatement. But, Oh Well. Army drops to 2 and 3. Steve? I'm fired up right now!

Barrios: [mumbling]

Peggy’s Patio

So the UAB series was our final hurrah of the baseball season at home. The Tulane Greenwave did not disappoint. We rallied back from a serious deficit to win the game 9-8.

It was a scorcher. Perfect for boiled crawfish and sangria in the lovely shaded area we have come to christen as “Peggy’s Patio.”

Can you believe I came home to find Mr. Hullabaloo carving this crested T into the watermelon we brought to the tailgating? I am impressed with Mr. Hullabaloo.

Priscilla made the BEST boiled crawfish ever to pass the lips of Mrs. Hullabaloo. She even included my absolute favorite mushrooms and introduced me to adding cauliflower into the boil. You know, just about anything goes well in a crawfish boil.

“Homecomingworthy” were these absolutely amazing chocolate mint brownies that Pam prepared.

They were just slap-your-momma-sinful. They were so delish we had to park Terry in front of the ice chest holding them and bounce any unapproved personnel who dared to attempt to help themselves. (Feel Free! You'd think this were a free country or something). I haven’t been able to solicit the recipe out of Pam, but I will die trying.

We had a new face re-joining the party in Section 110 towards the end of the season there and he brought us bacon-wrapped shrimp to grill. Delish. Also deigned “homecomingworthy.” Because last year I had Mr. Hullabaloo cleaning and skewering those suckers and I stressed myself out locating and making The Perfect Marinade.

"The Perfect" Coconut Shrimp Marinade
from Williams-Sonoma
Take 3 limes; slice up 1 lime into pretty lime slices; grate up the second lime for it’s zest; reserve the juice from the zested lime and your third lime. Take the following ingredients and give a quick whiz in a food processor: 1/2 cup dried flaked coconut; 1/2 cup milk; 1/4 cup golden rum ; 1 Tbs. honey. Combine chopped up stuff with the lime juice and grated zest. Marinate your shrimpies for 45 minutes. Then skewer with slices of red onion and your pretty sliced lime pieces.

On the grill, drizzle skewered up shrimp with mixture of olive oil and chopped fresh tarragon.

I can attest that Mr. Newcomer’s shrimp - while sans coconut and lime - were still garlicky butter deliciousness in that Drago's charbroiled kind of way. So that will be one less menu item to worry about. Since I have all these decorations and tablescaping to focus on.

On second thought, I don’t know..... I might just have to make a set just to see how stressed out I can make Mr. Hullabaloo while he’s also racing around the house packing up the car to my exact specifications and not behind one single second lest we miss one moment of tailgating.

Our very own "Just Joe," husband of "Just Gwynne," tossed out the first pitch for the game. Just Joe's company was a sponsor of the game and had a lovely tent with drinks and such behind the first plate bleachers. Just Joe nailed the first pitch. We were so proud! Geaux Joe!

Also happening at the UAB game: Tulane was honoring the football team from 1948 on the balcony behind homeplate. Somehow Mr. Hullabaloo and Mr. Newcomer ended up in the mix up there. The irresistable aroma of Hot Dogs can led men to abandon their wives.

The Friday night game against UAB got away from us even though the greenies valiantly rallied back from 8-3 to 8-7 and UAB took the win that night. Tulane stranded 15 players on base, we had 2 loaded base situations with no scoring. Quelle drag.

So Saturday when we got in a hole again 8-3, stranding players it was just dejavu all over again. I commenced butterflying about the stadium to and fro trying to find the right mojo setting. Peggy being caught on the pot in the ladies room during the ECU series was classic. We phoned Peggy while she was in the stall and forced her to stay put the entire inning. It was hilarious.

Unfortunately, there was no mojo spot to be found.

FF had imbibed himself into a serious situation during our crawfish session. See. Evidence of FF's pre-game imbibing.

So after spending a few moments melting in the sun, FF parked himself in a folding chair back outside in Peggy’s Patio to sleep it off. It was just too hot to roast out in the stands all dizzy and dehydrated. So the shade from Peggy’s Patio beckoned in the 7th inning and I joined FF. Put my headset on to listen to graf, rallied my baseball cap and settled in.

Next thing I know, the greenwave rally ensues. Peggy's Patio is the official Mojo Zone. Josh Prince scored on a double; Shaeffer hits a 2 run homer. Oh. My God. Tulane can actually come from behind. It is now 8-7 .

Mr. Hullabaloo, with Mr. Newcomer, decided to come join us at the Patio during the 8th inning rally. Everyone parked themselves on top of FF’s car.

Except for Mr. Koozie. Mr. Koozie decided that a plastic garbage tub was sturdy enough to stand on and peer over the fence to finish watching the game. No go. Mr. Koozie plum fell off that garbage tub.

Warning: crawfish alone is not enough to fill your tummy while enjoying adult beverages. Bad decisions will inevitably ensue.

It’s 8-8. Our little party in Peggy’s Patio rallied a GREEN! WAVE! cheer with the first base bleachers. And everyone went bezerk when Scott Powell hit a single to bring Josh Prince home (“Bring the Wave Home, Baby!”)

So then in the 9th inning we started having major heart palpitations that the game would go into extra innings in a tie situation. Nick Pepitone struck them out. Thank you very much!

And you know, we have NO idea just who the mystery person was that jumped the fence behind the flags in the outfield, courteously retrieved a fallen foam finger for the folks who watch the games on The Shed, loosened and lowered the UAB flag to half-staff and jumped back over the fence and disappeared into the New Orleans afternoon. We have not a clue. (Allegedly!)

All of us in Peggy’s Patio and the folks on The Shed about pee’d ourselves laughing about the flag. Even Todd Grafignini noticed and broadcast “I’m not sure if this is by design, but the UAB flag appears to be at half staff...”

Now I will say: the UAB baseball folks, ever demonstrating they were from Alabama, had absolutely IMPECCABLE manners. Thanks for coming blazers! ‘til we meet again!

ROLL WAVE!
